Many people who lose to weight also need to lower their cholesterol. Losing weight would of course make them look good and improve health. Concentrating on lowering cholesterol first would prolong their life.

What is high cholesterol anyway?

High cholesterol is caused by an overabundance of a waxy, fat like substance in the body. Your body needs cholesterol to work properly, as it protects your nerves, makes cell tissues and produces certain hormones. In fact, your liver makes all the cholesterol your body needs. We do not need to ingest extra cholesterol. When we take in too much cholesterol, it gets in your blood and can cause a build up (plaque) on your arteries. This plaque can narrow your arteries or block them causing a heart attack or a stroke.

How to know when you have too much cholesterol in your body?

Many people with high cholesterol levels have no idea there is a problem until it is too late. For this reason, doctors like to do blood tests to check. This should be done yearly. A normal cholesterol level would be less than a reading of 200. A borderline high cholesterol level would be a reading of 200-239. A high cholesterol reading would be 240 or more. Doctors also check for LDL and HDL Cholesterol levels, which are also called good or bad cholesterol. Good cholesterol (HDL) should be 60 or higher, and bad cholesterol (LDL) should be less than 100.

How to lower your cholesterol

There are several steps you can take to lower your cholesterol. First, you need to increase your exercise level. If you smoke, you need to stop immediately. You need to eat a low fat diet with fruits, vegetable, grains and fish. You also need to limit your alcoholic intake. If these steps do not work, there are cholesterol-lowering medicines.

Lowering your cholesterol level will also lower weight

The steps you must take to lower your cholesterol will also cause weight loss. Ironically, lowering your weight will also improve your cholesterol levels. Sure, you can take the medicines to lower your cholesterol level, but they are less likely to lower your weight and have numerous unpleasant side effects. If you find that you are overweight and your cholesterol level is a problem, stop spending so much time thinking about your weight, and concentrate on your cholesterol problem. The weight loss will be a pleasant side effect.

Lovely web content on wedding flower by the florist in Singapore

Beach Rose Florist, at 1308 Third Avenue in Spring Lake, NJ is one of the most unique florists at the Jersey shore. Beach Rose Florist is located on the main shopping street of Spring Lake. It is a quaint shop full of stunning flowers.

I have heard raves at a wedding over the beauty of a flower-decorated wedding cake designed by Beach Rose Florist. I also enjoy a quick browse through the store myself when window shopping down on Third Avenue.

The owner and founder of the store is a cancer survivor. She has created a business that is bringing much joy to the Jersey shore. Her flowers arrangements for weddings and parties are unique and joyful. I think a wedding cake decorated with real flowers is much more beautiful than one with flowers made of icing. Beach Rose florist creates beautiful flower arrangements on wedding cakes. Browse the website to see some of Beach Rose Florist's exquisite designs for wedding cake flowers. (www.beachroseflorist.com)

Flowers from Beach Rose Florist are always a lovely gift and coveted by those residing in this area! I have always thought that flowers are the best gift. When I receive flowers I feel cherished and feminine.

I also think flowers are good for one's health. Bringing a bit of nature inside is very therapeutic, especially in the winter months when nature is at its bleakest.

Flowers bring color and scent into a room. They improve one's mood and add an air of elegance to any décor. Whatever style you like there will be a flower to complement it. I favor roses, iris, daisies, and lilies. They all make me happy in different moods. Lilies smell wonderful and bring a touch of the exotic to a room. Roses are just beautiful and delicate and I love the scent. Daisies and iris remind me of summer gardens.

Oh, and ladies if you are single, remember the actress Marcia Cross met her boyfriend when she was browsing at a local florist and was brave enough to leave a note for him at the desk. She liked his voice and thought he was cute so she left him a note asking him to contact her. They're married now, even though he was in the store to buy flowers for someone else.

I think that is a very cute example of being proactive to find love! And it is sweet that Marcia was in a flower store buying flowers for herself and decided to make a move when she saw a man she found interesting.

Merlin Olsen, a former Los Angeles Rams Hall of Fame defensive lineman, has died at the age of 69. Olsen, a member of the famed Fearsome Foursome, passed away early Thursday morning from a battle with cancer. He was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer, in 2009.

In college Olsen was an All American at Utah State and won the Outland Trophy, given to the country's best interior defensive lineman, in 1961.

Olsen was a first round draft pick, the third overall pick, by the Rams in 1962. While with the Rams he teamed with linemen Rosie Grier, Deacon Jones, and Lamar Lundy to form the Fearsome Foursome, a defense group known for stopping offenses in their tracks. Olsen spent all 15 seasons of his professional football career with the Rams. He is the Rams all time leading tackler with 915 tackles.

Olsen earned NFL Most Valuable Player honors in 1974, and was named to the Pro Bowl in 14 consecutive seasons. He was named to the all decade team in both the 1960's and 1970's. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1982.

After his playing career ended Olsen would become a familiar on television as both an actor and a pitchman. He played Jonathan Garvey on “Little House on the Prairie.” He would get his own series in 1981 called “Father Murphy,” which lasted two seasons. He also appeared in FTD Florist ads for many. He also was a broadcaster for several years, with partner Dick Enberg, for NBC Sports.

Olsen filed suit against NBC Studios, 20th Century Fox Films, Sherwin Williams, and Lennox Industries claiming that he contacted his mesothelioma when exposed to asbestos while working for these companies. The lawsuit was filed in January of this year.

Sick of hearing about the transition from analog television to digital television? I know I am. I've been hearing about it since they invented the CD, I think, but the government sometime in between decided to help modernize the telecommunications industry and began showing Public Service Announcements and giving out free vouchers for digital conversion units for those who still like their television circa 1975.

Anyway, according to CNET.com (and all those Public Service Announcements), it all ends on June 12, or so we have been led to believe.

Which leads most of us to say, “Just do it, already.” Why? Because we've all been here before. In fact, many of us were at this very same spot a few months ago when someone somewhere in Washington — someone who probably has two friends in the mountains of Idaho who they know haven't received their vouchers or purchased a conversion unit — got the bright idea to extend the period of time until June 12.

And who really cares anyway? Not I, except that I'm sick of hearing about the coming of the conversion. Do the conversion. Get it over with. My house is digital ready and digital friendly.

The good news is that this time may truly be the end of it. President Obama said last week, “We have worked hand in hand with state and local officials, broadcasters and community groups to educate and assist millions of Americans with the transition…I want to be clear: there will not be another delay.”

There shouldn't have been a delay to begin with. With over $2 billion spent preparing people for the conversion to digital, not to mention all those Public Service Announcements, the U. S. should have taken a page out of the German way of doing things.

Back in 2001, when all the countries of the European Union had decided to switch their national currencies over to the Euro, every country allowed for a grace period in which people could still convert their holdings to Euros after the switchover date, which was January 1, 2002. The only exception to this was Germany. Germany told its people to have their financial affairs in order by December 31 or lose such finances as had not been converted. And that was that.

That is the way the United States should have handled the digital transition and conversion. One date. Get it done or watch it eternally snow.

But in the land of second chances for missed opportunities, the lethargic, the brain dead, and the willfully procrastinating — whose membership is now still estimated in the millions — were allowed a reprieve and given a few more months to either buy a new digitally accessible television or a converter unit for their trusty old analog model. That all ends on Friday, June 12.

Again. I don't care. I'm just sick of the Public Service Announcements talking to people who apparently stopped listening to them months ago. The problem I have is that I can still see and hear them.

So flick the switch. And for those unprepared, let them watch snow…

Lovely reports on wedding flower by a florist in Singapore

Visit same day flowers here or florist gifts here

Cut flowers provide a variety of uses. Not only can freshly cut flowers be enjoyed in beautiful bouquets, but they can be used for more permanent accents as well. For instance, cut flowers can be dried and crafted into decorative wreaths, centerpieces, sconces, etc. Cut flowers can also be used to make fragrant sachets and potpourri. The possibilities are endless. Use them as decorative accents in your home or as unique gifts for family and friends. Create a twig and flower wreath by gathering some 6 inch twigs from your favorite trees or shrubs. Collect them with or without buds; this is more a personal choice. Wrap the twigs onto a wire wreath frame (or construct one from a hanger) with wire or bread ties. Add dried flowers, such as purple and yellow statice; you could also add some eucalyptus and wheat stems, if desired. Attach a piece of wire to the back for hanging. A wreath full of rose buds and baby’s breath looks lovely topped off with ribbon; or perhaps, a grapevine wreath decorated with sprigs of milkweed pods, baby’s breath, statice, and wheat would be more to your liking. Add some ribbon and pinecones for additional interest. These, of course, are only suggestions. Whatever design you choose is ultimately up to you.

There are several ways to dry flowers. One of the easiest is air drying. Simply cut the desired flowers in equal lengths and divide them into small bunches. Fasten these together with twine or other suitable material that prevents crushing stems. Hang upside down in a dark, dry area such as an attic or pantry. Avoid places that are high in humidity, such as basements. Allow approximately two weeks for the flowers to dry. Popular cut flowers for this method include goldenrod, baby’s breath, statice, hydrangea, salvia, yarrow, Heather, tansy, and globe amaranth. Another easy option is to seal flowers in an airtight container of silica gel. This absorbs moisture from flowers while preserving their natural colors and only takes about two weeks to dry. Silica gel can be purchased at most garden centers, or you can improvise by using cornmeal instead. Carnation, marigold, dahlia, rose, larkspur, hollyhock, clematis, black-eyed Susan, and zinnia all work well for this method. Pressing flowers between sheets of newspaper and boards is another alternative. Top the layers off with a heavy object. This process usually takes up to four weeks before flowers are dry, depending on the particular flower. Good choices for this method might include aster, marigold, zinnia, violet, mum, pansy, dahlia, buttercup, cosmos, daisy, and rose.

Annuals, perennials, bulbs, and even woody plants can be used as cut flowers. Annuals are generally grown every year and offer significant blooming throughout the seasons. Since these flowers survive only a year, annual trips to garden centers or nurseries will be needed, unless you collect their seeds. Perennials also provide an abundance of blooms but present another bonus as well; they only require a one-time planting as these plants return each year, drastically cutting your need to continually purchase additional flowers. Bulbs are often treated as annuals; however, there are perennial varieties. These flowers can provide outstanding blooms but can be costly if purchased each year. On the other hand, taking bulbs out of the ground and over-wintering them indoors can ensure an endless supply of blooms once spring returns. Woody plants offer the opportunity to harvest something at nearly any time of the year. For instance, during spring and summer, these plants will produce amazing buds and blooms; during fall and winter, they will provide stunning berries, interesting bark, and colorful foliage.

Cut flowers can offer many design options. For example, they can be grown in large or small plots, raised beds, island flowerbeds, borders, and even containers. When designing you cut-flower garden, choose a site with well-drained soil that receives full sun and shelter from wind. Windbreaks such as hedges or trees are ok, but these may compete with the garden for moisture and nutrients; therefore, it may be more suitable to use a wall, fence, or trellis instead. For better results, the soil should be enriched with compost. Of course, as with most any plant, water is critical; therefore, locate the cut-flower garden near an ample water source. If your design includes placement along an existing wall, fence, or other similar structure, you may want to put taller plants in the back and gradually work your way down. For instance, tall plants such as hollyhocks and sunflowers would be placed the furthest back, while medium plants such as dahlias or snapdragons would be placed next and followed by smaller growing plants like alyssum along the front edge. If the garden is set within an island or raised bed, the same downward progression should be followed with exception to larger plants. These would be placed in the center instead. Use a similar planting scheme for multiple flowers grown in one container. Raised beds, in my opinion, are the easiest to prepare and care for. They provide adequate drainage and allow for easier maintenance and harvesting as all sides are generally accessible. For easy access, make the beds no more than 3 or 4 feet wide. Incorporating mulched paths or walkways between individual beds will also add to its appearance. As with most any garden design, you can be as creative as you would like. You should never feel forced into designing a garden as someone else would; experimenting is part of the fun.

Flowers bloom at various times within the growing season; plan your cut garden accordingly, and you will enjoy them year round. To give the cut garden additional interest, plant an assortment of flowers with various shades of color as well as different heights and textures. You do not have to feel limited to flowers in the cut garden. Incorporate interesting foliage plants, such as wheat or eucalyptus, and use them as fillers for bouquets and wreaths. Many herbs and evergreens also make lovely additions. Plants should be put into the ground once the soil has warmed and the threat of frost has passed. Overhead watering should be avoided, if possible; this can lead to significant splashing or flower damage. It is often better to implement some sort of drip irrigation system for watering. Supplying the garden with mulch will help retain moisture and reduce weeding. Freshly harvested flowers, whether for bouquet usage or drying, should be placed in lukewarm water immediately to avoid wilting.

Just about every doctor I've talked to says that walking is about the healthiest activity you can do except for swimming. Fortunately, I have the luxury of belonging to a University athletic program that has great facilities for both and a heated pool in the winter. But many people either can't afford to belong to a club or program and they have a huge difficulty in getting motivated. It may seem facile to write a short guide to walking, because anyone can walk, right? Well, yes and no. Anyone can walk if they're in normal health, but do they actually do it regularly? The answer is oftentimes a resounding, “NO.” Walking briskly exercises your joints, strengthens bones and back, and it has a decided effect on lowering blood pressure and building stamina and overall strength.

After my hip replacement surgery I could walk only short distances for about four weeks. After that time I still had to force myself to get out the front door and go to the park across the street and take a brisk stroll two or three times around the outer periphery of the grounds. I don't think I really walked more than about a mile and a half at any time. I had just gotten out of the habit I had so carefully cultivated before all my hip problems. I had to begin getting back into them if I wanted to feel like my old self and begin loosing some of the weight I had put on around my middle from sheer inertia. The basics I'll be laying out are not to be done in exactly the order listed. They're all important. It doesn't matter that you purchase a pedometer first or get up a walking group first. The important thing is to commit to a routine and stick to it almost religiously.

There are some really simple basics that anyone beginning a serious walking or exercise routine should follow, and I mean strictly follow them. The first is to decide exactly how many times you're going to walk per week, write it down and stick to it! Don't do this and I can guarantee that walking will not become part of your daily life. In fact, not doing this will absolutely ensure that any resolutions made about walking will be broken in short order. Once a routine has been established, put it up on the refrigerator door or somewhere prominent so it can't be ignored. Start off slowly, perhaps setting a schedule to walk at least four times a week for at least two miles. This is slow and it isn't too taxing. Nor will it eat into the daily schedule for work and family and friends. Walk for four days, doing two miles a day, and it will only take about 45 minutes to an hour of time. Start off at a moderate pace, the same rate you walk when going across a parking lot, for instance. Later you can speed up and even use some wrist weights on your arms when swinging them. This adds to the energy burned and also makes walking a more overall workout.

Try to schedule walks at the same times every day so that you know when it's going to be done, and everything else can fall in around it. If you work, try to walk in the mornings or afternoons outside office hours. If you live in a less than desirable neighborhood, get in the car and drive to the nearest park to take your stroll. That's what I've begun doing. But the thing that's important is to establish a time you can walk each day and make it sacrosanct, so that nothing else can interfere. This walking is about health, and though it can be a lot of fun, it's paramount to a healthy life if no other exercise is available.

The next thing you should do is to purchase a small headset radio so that the time will go faster. Many people just enjoy hearing the birds and wind in the trees, but if you get bored easily, by all means, carry something with you that will distract from the monotony of repetitive movement. It is also crucial that you purchase a small pedometer, which measures the steps taken. Many pedometers now measure heart rate and calories burned too. Some even have a bit of instruction on how to begin, how to increase speed, and how to set goals using the instrument. These are absolutely marvelous tools because they give a walker something to measure progress with and also indicate how fast your heart is having to work to maintain a brisk pace. That rate should go down a bit even as you speed up the routines, because the heart is becoming more efficient and much stronger. That's the beauty of walking. It is a workout for the organs. It also helps flush toxins through the system that accumulate through the day from medications, inertia, or just from oxidation of our cells.

Last, I have also found that walking with a group is one of the best motivators available. Even if there is just one person walking with you, if they're as motivated as you are, the walks will be much more fun and less like routines. Some cities have web resources where people can contact walking groups and set up schedules together. Use google or another search engine to type in your search and see what comes up. Church bulletin boards and gyms at colleges and universities are good places to tack a notice up and begin a group. Meet together when a few people have signed up and decide on a time that's most convenient for everyone. Then all there is to do is start!

As I stated at the beginning all of the things mentioned are important. If you begin walking alone with a pedometer first, fine. Later on, get a radio and establish a walking group. If you have a group but no pedometer, that's fine too. Purchase one when you can. Nothing is set in stone here. But all the suggestions I've made will add up to keep you on a serious walking regimen that will become more and more fun as it becomes a part of your daily life. The effect on mental health as well as on the body is incredible.

Fifteen years ago, I had a co-worker who took out a singles ad in a local paper. She was in her mid-30's and had recently broken up with her long-term boyfriend, and wasn't sure of the best way to go about re-entering the dating scene. Along the way in her dating adventures, she met an ex-con, an artist who was more interested in what she was wearing than in her, and a guy who could talk of nothing but himself.

At the time, I thought she was both brave and crazy. I couldn't imagine meeting up with total strangers who had responded to a few lines from a newspaper ad. But many years later, when I myself was suddenly single, I turned to online dating.

In today's world, meeting online is an increasingly common and acceptable method of dating. Gone are the days when someone would look at you sideways and say “but you don't look like a geek” if you explained that you'd met your date or significant other on the internet.

That doesn't mean that internet dating is always safe. I personally met my boyfriend as well as several platonic friends online. A close friend of mine from college met the girl he married through Match.com. On the flip side, I know quite a few singles who met people who turned out to be vastly different in person from their online personas. I've had friends fall for fantasies woven online. Worst of all, I've read tales of people of both sexes being stalked by someone they met online, including a local case where a woman was murdered by a man she met on a social networking site.

As scary as these outcomes are, the reality is they can happen with any type of dating. People find their lives turned upside down by men and women they meet at the store, the bar, or through a work conference too. You have to be mindful of risks and aware when things aren't quite right, regardless of how you've met someone. If you choose to venture into online dating, there are extra precautions you can take to protect yourself.

1. Look for Warning Signs Well Before You Meet

We've all heard the horror stories about internet relationships that go on forever. She wants to meet, and he says he does too, but for some reason he's always canceling at the last minute. Maybe it's the wife and kids he conveniently hasn't mentioned. Or maybe she's the one who keeps stalling on getting together. Just as there are members of both sexes who “trophy date” in bars, there are men and women online who are interested in creating online fantasies or flirting away hours of boredom, but who have no intention of actually dating or moving into a relationship.

So you don't want to waste too much time in email and endless instant message bantering, unless that's all you're looking for too. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't invest plenty of time getting to know the person you're talking to before you exchange phone numbers or make a date.

Spend enough time conversing through email or chat to make sure there's a pattern of consistency in your potential date's online personality. Do the stories about his or her job, friends and home life remain consistent, or do they seem to change as time goes on?

If he talks about his successful career the first time you discuss work but as you get to know each other he admits that he'd give it all up if he could be a teacher or a writer, you probably don't have cause for alarm. He's just opening up to you and sharing his dreams. But if she's a lawyer who gets confused when you talk about the constitutional amendments, then she might be feeding you a line.

Also look for warning signs of anger and bitterness. Can he get through a conversation without spewing venom at his ex-wife or girlfriend? Is she always harping on her “all men cheat” motto? Bitterness doesn't necessarily make one a stalker, but it can create a miserable dating experience.

2. Use Caution When Giving Out Email and Phone Contact Information

Eventually, you'll want to move away from the message system or chat options at the online dating venue you're using and move your conversations to a more private forum. Ideally, you should have a few conversations before doing so.

Consider creating a free email account and/or instant messenger that you use specifically for online dating. Giving out your work email address or the email and messenger accounts you use to communicate with friends and family can wait. If the smart, funny guy you meet on a dating site turns out to be a bored shut-in who's just hoping you'll entertain him with your webcam, do you really want him to be able to reach you through your regular contact information?

The same goes for exchanging phone numbers. Don't give out your home number until you've spent some time with someone in person. Ideally, you won't give out your regular cell number, either. You can purchase a system like TrackPhone, with prepaid minutes, and use them for taking your online conversations to the next step.

It may sound a little paranoid. But again, it beats having someone you decide you don't want to talk to know how to reach you at your regular phone number. Do you really want your cell phone ringing nonstop at work because that girl you decided seemed a little off-kilter is still into you?

3. If You Live Alone, Don't Admit It

I advocate honesty in online dating. You expect the person you're talking with to be upfront with you, so you should extend the same courtesy to him or her.

But, dishonest or not, I make one exception. If you live alone, don't admit it, especially if you're female. Predatory types often prefer to target people who live alone. Don't go out of you way to weave stories about roomies or family members who don't exist, but don't make it clear that you are by yourself, either.

Of course, if you meet the right person they'll eventually learn your true living situation. If you explain that you don't give information that you feel might put your safety at risk until you are certain there won't be an issue, the right person will understand and even respect your guardedness.

4. Be Vague About Location

It is hard to let someone in on the interesting things in your life without discussing your neighborhood, and your job. But you can talk about the kind of work you do and that funny thing your co-worker did without giving out your company address. You can talk about the places you go for fun without describing them in such detail that someone would be able to find you there. You can give generalities about where you live without directing a potential psycho to your street.

When you feel you are “clicking” with someone online, it can be tempting to throw caution to the wind and share too much, especially if they're asking. But remember that someone who presses for too much information early on is probably a person you don't want to meet anyway.

5. Get A Photo

Of course, a photograph of the person you'll be meeting is helpful in deciding whether he or she is someone you want to date. But it's also a wise safety measure.

Share the photo with a few trusted friends, and let the person you'll be meeting know you've done so.

Of course, we've all heard tales of people sending photos that look nothing like them. But if you arrive at your meeting destination and don't see anyone who looks like the person you're expecting, then you know to turn around and leave. If they've misrepresented themselves in a picture, who knows what else you'll be in for.

6. Choose a Meeting Location With Safety In Mind

Don't be convinced to go far out of your way for a first in-person date. You should pick a location that is both very public and well-traveled, and familiar to you. If the person you're meeting is worth a date, then he'll understand your desire to be in safe and comfortable surroundings.

While you want to pick a meeting spot you know, don't invite a relative stranger to hook up with you at your favorite hangout. Pick a restaurant or coffee shop you've been to before and enjoyed, but not the java joint you frequent on your way to work each morning or the place you and your friends hang out for a few after-work beers every Friday night.

You want to be somewhere you can navigate to and from easily. You want to know your surroundings enough to feel comfortable, safe and in charge of your situation. But just in case your date turns out to be a dud or worse, don't bring him or her into a part of your regular routine the first time around. The last thing you want is that guy who turns out to be a first-rate creep showing up at your local watering hole for weeks on end.

7. Spread the Word

Let at least two friends know where you will be going, who you will be meeting, when you will be there and how to get in touch with you. Carry your cell phone at all times. You may not a want to have a first date with your best friend it tow, but it doesn't hurt to have her hanging out with a few other folks at a nearby location.

8. Make a Plan for Getting Home, and Stick to It.

Having your car with you can make you feel safe and secure. But you may want to consider choosing a safe, public location you can get to by bus, metro or subway. Make sure the public transportation route you choose requires that you get on and off the bus in a busy area filled with other commuters.

Choosing a mode of transportation other than your car eliminates the awkward situation of having your date accompany you to an empty parking lot at the end of the night. In the worst-case scenario, where the person is someone you know you won't want to have any more information about you than he or she already does, it also means your date won't know what you drive.

If you choose the public transportation option and your date goes wonderfully, you might be tempted to accept a ride home at the end of the evening. Resist this temptation on the first go-round. Get to know someone a bit more before you put your safety in his hands, or before you let him know where you live.

Online dating can be an exciting adventure and a great way to meet new people. You may find the person of your dreams, or just a few new friends. But it is important that you proceed with caution, avoid giving out too much personal information early on, and watch for warning signs.

Most online daters are just looking for romance or friendship, just like you. But it only takes one person who is just creating online fantasies, one bitter and angry individual who wouldn't know a good date if it bit her, or one person looking to take advantage of you or who has stalker tendencies to ruin your experience or worse. People in the online dating world who are worth getting to know won't be offended by your caution, because they'll be exercising their own.
